Explore a Minefield with Angelina Jolie
HALO is using Google Earth technology to bring efficiency and transparency to humanitarian landmine clearance. Join us as we tour mine-affected areas of Cambodia and Angola to see how mineclearance helps build safe, thriving communities.
The HALO Trust and Google
Fighting for survival doesn’t always end when the war does. Landmines and other explosive remnants
continue to endanger some of the world’s most vulnerable people, injuring and killing thousands
every year and preventing economic growth. In these Google Earth tours, we’ll show you how HALO’s
landmine removal has meant that families can return home, land can be used for agriculture, roads can
be re-opened, and that children can walk to school safely – in short, communities can begin to thrive.
You’ll also learn about the mine-affected villages which still need our help. Together we can change the
world, one minefield at a time.
The HALO Trust has teamed up with Google Earth Outreach to map minefields around the world.
HALO uses Google Earth Pro for minefield survey,
data validation and to produce maps for donors,
governments, and other NGOs. Google Earth’s historical imagery technology allows HALO to provide
time-lapse images that clearly show how landmine removal is helping to rebuild communities.

Narrated by Angelina Jolie
"In the aftermath of war, HALO’S mine-clearing efforts are fundamental to a safe return and community building."
- Angelina Jolie
Angelina first learned about the landmine issue and the work of The HALO Trust while filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia. She recalls being told only to walk where it had already been demined. For an American, the idea that the ground might be unsafe to walk on was a foreign concept. She has since been an advocate of HALO’s work, visiting and supporting mine removal efforts in a number of war-torn countries including Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Kosovo. In Cambodia, HALO is a partner of the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation (MJP), an organization Angelina founded nearly 10 years ago which is committed to rural poverty eradication and environmental security.
